Merging Western and Japanese art traditions, Akiko Kuniyoshi’s abstract paintings offer a harmonious blend of cultural aesthetics. Aoife Claffey crafts immersive environments that stimulate human sensory perception through interactive projections and soundscapes. Arbnor Karaliti and Ermir Zhinipotoku’s duo delves into the complexities of modern existence, intertwining personal narratives with broader existential themes in their sensitive paintings. Clara Silveira transforms intimate recollections into evocative narratives, fostering a dialogue between personal and collective memories. Dane Palmieri’s sculptures and installations mine the emotional depths of sentiment and memory, creating new physical realities. Combining drawing, text, and sculpture, Elisa Pardo Puch’s installations propose new narratives that invite spectator connection. Emilia Rigaud’s work challenges the perceived separation between nature and culture by exploring the interconnectedness of human and non-human bodies of water. Through contemporary photography, Evgeniya Korkunova captures sensuality and tenderness, highlighted by minimalism and lighting.

Engaging with science, technology, and philosophy, Isabel Englebert’s multidisciplinary works span sculpture, video, and AI, exploring the frontiers of virtuality and hyperreality. Spanish musician and composer Jesús Gallardo invites us into a rich sound universe with his experimental and contemporary music compositions. Blending art and technology, Jiatong Yao crafts experiences that unite humanity with the digital age through mediums like XR and AI. Kate Bohunnis explores gender and identity through inventive material usage, working across metal, marble, textiles, and more. Lorenzo Ballerini’s installations and performances animate ordinary objects, bridging real and virtual environments with sound and light. Examining identity and intimacy within digital realms, Lotte Louise de Jong’s work unveils overlooked facets of online personas. Manon Steyaert’s paintings and sculptures delve into themes of perception through wall-based and freestanding works. Focused on memory and time’s impact on objects, Marcos Kaiser Mori’s sculptures and installations reveal their transformations.

Naohiro Maeda integrates photography and embroidery to create pieces that deconstruct and reconstruct landscapes. Nelson Hernández recontextualizes iconic images from popular culture and art history, infusing his paintings with irony and humor. Nick Chiado’s sculptures navigate the unwieldy aspects of existence, utilizing a variety of materials and processes. Using lens-based media, Olivia Johnston explores themes of chronic illness, loss, and gender through her Catholic ancestry and aesthetics. Parisian film and performance artist Pauline Maure presents performative screenings that are continuously reworked through live interventions. Suyi Xu’s contemplative paintings morph into meditations on color and form, constructing intuitive labyrinths. Toyah Robinson’s oil paintings draw on imagery from interiors, street art, and found objects to create dynamic compositions. As a psychology student, Valeria Golovenkina’s creative research focuses on personal identity and the psyche. Vivian Hou’s works seek transcendence amidst the absurdities of our technological and architectural era.

The Project Space on the ground floor presents “A Dream Brought Me Here” a group exhibition in collaboration with Galeria NAVE, Lisbon, on display from June 15 to 29. This exhibition explores the poetic slowness of history, marked by vivid colors and deep, fascinating shades of black. It delves into the human quest for perfection and the ephemeral, residing in the dreamscape where powerful emotions and images come to life. The ethereal dream serves as a forum where ideas and ideologies extend immeasurably, echoing John Berger’s assertion in “Ways of Seeing” that looking is an act of choice.

Every three months, GlogauAIR releases a new catalogue, collecting the work and projects of the artists in residence. The catalogue in your hands not only showcases this term’s creations but also constitutes a reflection of this past term’s experiences.

Our first catalogue edition was released in 2006, and it has changed a lot since then. Since 2021, the catalogue cover is now decided by an open call to all of the participating artists. Making this publication a canvas in which our artists in residence can intervene, results in a more personal publication for every residency term. Participating in the cover of the catalogue also allows the artists to translate their work into a different medium. 

After carefully reviewing the proposals for this session, the jury selected the image submitted by the artistic duo Arbnor Karaliti and Ermir Zhinipotoku, visual artists from Kosovo. The duo met during their studies and began working together due to their shared interest in existential themes and pushing the boundaries of traditional painting.

The image selected for the cover, ‘A Weaving Story’, ultimately captures something about the experience of the residency and the production of art itself. ‘A Weaving Story’ is a detail of a larger triptych painted by both artists during their residency, which was shown in our showcase window facing the street. The artistic freedom artists encounter, while participating in a residency, is evidenced in this painting and the outpouring of artwork the artistic duo has completed in the past three months.

Karaliti and Zhinipotuku’s current research and artistic production is characterized by Karaliti’s process-oriented approach, intertwined with Zhinipotoku’s profound reflections on existentialism and the absurd. Their works come together as they examine topics of isolation, loneliness and the inner turmoil of human existence.

GlogauAIR residency is a place for artists to fully concentrate on their artwork; exploring, experimenting and exhibiting. During Karaliti and Zhinipotuku’s three-month residency, they were able to explore their topics and research freely during their presentation in our showcase window, culminating in our open studios event with all of the resident artists.
