Statement
Lauren May is an artist from New Zealand. Her practice spans painting and sculpture, working with materials that possess an innate bodily quality and poetic resonance: mold making, ceramics, resin, silicon, and polymer clay, and intricate oil painting.
Within the work, she extracts the strange symbolic forms and dreamlike logic of fairy tale narratives, encrusted with imagery, motifs, and symbols dragged up from a human collective unconscious. Mining this material, in order to locate a portal, a wound in reality, a conduit for the weird.
Beauty and seduction, a bodily transcendence, held against an undercurrent of abjection. The work employs elaborate, ornate hyperreality that tips into an uncanny verisimilitude.
