Minjung Lee is a visual artist and painter based in Karlsruhe, Germany. She completed her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at the Pusan National University in Busan Korea in 2011, and move to Germany in 2013 to find more artistic stimulation and develop her art. She was at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe from 2014 to 2020 and completed her master’s degree, where she began to be interested in exploring paintings in the digitized and mechanized era.

Lee works with images collected from digital media because of her interest in which images are handled in the digital world, as well as how she experiences them, and that is the main theme of her paintings. She was interested in the images being arranged in the digital world by mechanical, mathematical, and algorithmic calculations, and used it as her painting material. She always questions herself about the position of painting nowadays and the direction that painting tendencies evolve. Especially, how can paintings relate to current times and use of images? And how does a painting itself make a difference? Minjung Lee is studying and experimenting with those questions.

During her time as a Virtual Resident at GlogauAIR, Lee has worked to deepen her research about digital image and panting continuing with her projects and themes. She studied to expand her understanding of digital images and apply them to her paintings shown at this edition of Open Studios.
