Tree branch wrapped in canvas string discards with water-based paint
I work with discards: the remains of the painting process, the remains of the canvas itself.
I animate canvas, paint, and wood into bodies and little creatures. This found branch is contained and preserved through acts of wrapping, hanging, bandaging and encasing. And the canvas that lies beneath it has been painted through gestures of pouring and clumping.
Although placed on display, both of these sculptural works are shy and hide themselves entirely from view. Within themselves, they carry the memory of former materials as well as tactile processes.
You’ll be able to see more of Uma Halsted’s work during our upcoming Open Studios on 16th and 17th of December!
