Over the past months, I’ve been thinking a lot about presence and absence and relating them to “the eerie”, that which emerges when there is an absence where there should be a presence, or a presence where there should be none.
The project I’m currently developing is a long-term work composed of a video game and a set of sculptures. It began with a specific geographical situation that occurred in Spain in 2023; due to extreme drought, the water level of a reservoir dropped to just 4% of its capacity, revealing the ruins of the village of Sant Romà de Sau, which was submerged in the 1960s to make way for a dam. I visited the site and 3D scanned the remains, and what struck me was the tension between what should have remained invisible, underwater, and what was now exposed.

The sculpture presented here is part of this ongoing process, and emerged from an error in the mold-making stage — a mistake I chose to keep for this presentation. I’m a fan of showing mistakes and moments of failure, and rather than a finished product, this work-in-progress is a trace of research and of an ongoing attempt to relate material with disappearance.
