Bryn K. McConnell is a textile artist from the United States, now concluding her 6-month residency here at GlogauAIR. Upon her arrival to Berlin, McConnell was inspired by the patchwork patterns of Berlin’s sidewalks and began experimenting with an inventive process of weaving metal grids to repeat the patterns. She often gathers her materials while exploring the city, like souvenirs, telling stories of her journey.
From small scale works sewn into a colander to expansive collages created with repurposed fences, McConnell’s technique is defined by meticulous, rhythmic, and textured landscapes woven between the rigid structure of a metal grid. McConnell’s weaving installation of our showcase window grille is employing a structural element designed to be overlooked. By implementing her handcraft technique into the ready-made foundation harnesses arts’ ability to fill in gaps between automated design.
Moving forward from her time at GlogauAIR, McConnell aims to explore how her artistic technique can be adapted for future design and architectural purposes.
