Esteban Huacuja Mena was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, later  moving  to Monterrey, where the contrast between craft traditions and industrial culture shaped his thinking. Drawing has remained central to his practice since childhood, first as a way to navigate the world and later as a way to develop and record thoughts and ideas.

His interest in various disciplines led him to study architecture, where art, technique, and spatial thinking could coexist. His practice moves between an internal world of images and speculative forms and the physical world in which they take shape. Through drawing, models, prototypes, and fabrication, Huacuja develops objects and environments that engage with architecture and the scale of the body. He is interested in forms that feel simultaneously ancient and futuristic, building speculative mythologies through recurring symbols and imagined systems.

During his residency at GlogauAIR, Huacuja is developing an ongoing codex based on a family archive of vintage paper, using watercolor, graphite, ink, and printing techniques. The project began earlier this year at Virreina residency in Colombia, the 333 page project functions as a living archive shaped by everyday life, travel, memory, and experience. Its aged, scroll-like pages accumulate time, with each residency becoming another chapter in an expanding work that continues to evolve across places and contexts.
