[SOUND WORKS] – AN AUDIO-ONLY EXHIBITION WITH MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ, LAURIE ANDERSON AND MIRANDA JULY

IN BERLIN FROM 26 JUNE TO 6 JULY

The French sound art gallery Le Son 7 is very proud to present [Sound works], an exhibition that brings together audio-only works by three visionary artists known for their transformative contributions to contemporary art and performance: Marina Abramović, Laurie Anderson and Miranda July.

The exhibition is the gallery’s first in Berlin and will run from 26 June to 6 July, 2025, at Glogauer Str. 16, 10999 Berlin.

While this stellar combination of artists have many common themes and practices, they explore those through their own very different paths.

There will be a piece by each artist, spanning more than 50 years of sound art.

‘The Tree’ by Marina Abramović, dates from 1971 from a period where the artist was using sound to intervene in spaces, a practice that led directly to her using her own body in her art. The piece – a recording of birds chirping will be played around a tree in the garden of the exhibition space – illustrates how, as the curator Chrissie Iles puts it, “Abramović interest in sound was stimulated by the combination of its immateriality and its ability to have a direct impact on the body without involving the intellect”.

‘The Drifters’ by Miranda July, is a series of ten short dialogues created for the 2002 Whitney Biennial and played in the museum’s elevator. The works fall between her d.i,y. plays, her spoken word records and her feature films. The dialogues build worlds out of fragments, drawing in the listener with humour and daring them to fill in the missing pieces. After three decades of self-directed approaches to art, Miranda July had her first solo museum exhibition last year in Fondazione Prada in Milan.

The piece by Laurie Anderson, a binaural recording of a multichannel work, is a new, as yet untitled work created in 2025 for this exhibition. Of the three artists, Laurie Anderson is the most connected with sound art, though she’s also known as a performance artist, musician, film-maker and multi-media artist. Her piece will be presented on headphones.

In the exhibition there will also be the opportunity to listen to the work represented by the gallery of German-based artists such as Theo Altenberg, Burnt Friedman, KMRU, Elsa M’bala, and Emeka Ogboh.

Le Son 7 (“le son sept”) works only with sound, leaving aside other recurrent practices in sound art, like performance, installations or video. Since 2021, the gallery has established a permanent space in the south of France and held exhibitions in Paris, Buenos Aires, London, Madrid and New York.
