The showcase this week is featuring work ‘Untitled’ by resident artist Emily Thomas.
Emily Thomas was born in Somerset (UK) in 1996. Fascinated by the urban environment and its community, she moved to London in 2014. After completing her Foundation Diploma in Arts and Design with Distinction at Camberwell College of Arts, Emily began her Fine Art degree at Chelsea College of Arts, graduating in July 2018.
In her practice, Emily explores the thematic, repetitive features of buildings, as well as their structural forms and materiality. She is interested in architecture as an indicator of historical, social and cultural characteristics within different urban areas.
For the showcase window, Emily presents three works based on architecture she discovered while exploring Kreuzberg. This is personal work as it evokes the artist’s impression of the city in her first few days at Glogauair. The bright colours have been emphasised in the work to evoke the querky characteristics of the neighbourhood and multicultural community. The contrasting dark colours bring undertones of gentrification. Emily has used a variety of different structural styles to demonstrate the range of architecture found in Kreuzberg from different time periods.
Emily Thomas is a resident artist at GlogauAir from January till the end of March. She will be presenting work at GlogauAIR’s Open Studios on March 22 and 23, 2019.
