Intensity of Memory

Using the Holchigi structure, Sarah explores how the intensity of memory can be translated onto the surface of the painting.
Variations in density, texture, and transparency allow certain areas to hold stronger pressure while others remain lighter or fragmented, reflecting how memories persist, fade, or reappear.

Structure of Memory & Surface Experiments

Concept sketch mapping how memory is wrapped,
carried, and gradually fixed within the surface.

During the residency, she began experimenting with Holchigi (홀치기), a traditional Korean fabric-binding technique. Through acts of tying, pulling, and releasing cloth, the structure creates tension and pressure that resembles the way memory is stretched, held, and slowly transformed over time.

Edge of Memory

In the series Edge of Memory, Sarah Baek explores the moment when memory has not yet settled in a fixed image.
Through layered surfaces, fragments of color, and subtle shifts in transparency, the paintings evoke how memories can fade, shift, or linger at the edges of perception.
