Chiu I-Chi is a Taiwanese visual artist working across painting, embroidery, soft sculpture, and installation. She creates fictional organisms that exist between bodies, plants, organs, and wounds, using them to reflect on healing, transformation, mutation, and the memories carried by the body.

During her residency at GlogauAIR, Chiu is developing soft sculptures painted directly on fabric. These works have pearlescent surfaces, vein-like patterns, and soft bodies that seem to grow, heal, or repair themselves from within. Through this process, she brings together the sculptural language of Hello, Would You Like a Piercing? and the organic painting textures of Beneath the Skin.

Chiu sees skin as a surface that records lived experience. Wounds, scars, and wrinkles form a body’s unique history. In Berlin, she observes tree knots and wounds along the canal, transforming these forms into marks on the bodies of her imagined organisms. Inspired by museum specimens, she constructs a new species shaped by biological observation and poetic fiction. Drawing from her experience in her family’s piercing shop, Chiu also transforms piercing into a cultural and ritual symbol within this species.

Through these works, Chiu invites viewers to encounter a beauty that is intimate, strange, and slightly uncomfortable. She hopes the audience can sense how wounds and illness change the body, while also seeing how these beings continue to live, adapt, and quietly heal with their scars.
