Towards the West presents a selection of works made by students from Department of Painting and New Media from Szczecin Academy of Art. It is thought as a symbolic journey from Szczecin to the West, to Berlin considered as the artistic and cultural capital nowadays.

The paradox of Szczecin is based on its location. On one hand it is easier and quicker to get from there to Berlin, then to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. On the other, for the Warsaw art scene it is too far to the West and for Berlin is still seen as the East.

Szczecin, sometimes called ‘the forgotten sister of Berlin’, lies somewhere off the track and remains undiscovered. But it seems like the West is its obvious direction and Berlin gives the source of inspiration and offers a platform for the presentation, confrontation and creating the network.

The exhibition Towards the West tends to present the potential of the youngest Polish art academy. Its originality is connected with the teaching staff, consisting of professors and established Polish artists. To work in a new institution gives them a possibility to create innovative methods of art education, which results are worth presenting in Berlin. Additional objective of the Towards
the West exhibition is to confront future artists with the potential of Berlin art scene. Its diversity should prepare
them to the professional career and give impulses for further development.

The concept of the exhibition relates to the motive of journey and wander. The journey itself has a symbolic meaning and deals with various aspects of human condition. The exhibition shows two opposite moments inherent in any journey. The approach toward the destination connects with excitement of the new which appears. On the contrary, leaving is bounded with the anxiety of abandonment of the environment, which is safe and well known.

Through painting, collage, photography, video and installation, students deal with the subject of journey on different levels and in different forms, recalling their private experiences or use phenomena of the contemporary world.

The exhibition context has been enlarged by the documentation of the performance by the Mexican artist Ilya Noé. In her recent work, the artist walked the distance from Berlin to Szczecin. In the environment of the exhibition Noé’s work gives another direction: from the center to the new, undiscovered destination.
