KYOKO FUJIWARA

Japan 1966

The site-specific installations that I create are an attempt to express the notion of boundaries, and the silent, unknown world lying beyond lived experience. Combining steel and glass in bold sculptural forms, my visual investigations represent inseparable yet contradictory ideas-interior and exterior, eternity and demise, sanctity and secularity. Such antithetical concepts occupy my imagination, acting both as a source of anxiety and solace which inform the creative process. Hard, strong and cold on the one hand yet fragile and breakable on the other, steel and glass also possess similar contradictory characteristics. These materials are cut, welded, inlaid and fused together to make structures resembling gates, bridges and stairs-motifs that act as metaphors for boundaries that are seamlessly integrated into the venues of each work. Exploiting the environmental and architectural features of the spaces in which they are presented, in addition to the innate qualities of the materials, my work generates a strong sense of tension lying at the boundary between the known world and what lies beyond it.

Project

Setting the theme as the discovery of structures in Berlin and focusing on the relationship between architecture and structure as well as materials and space, through the extraction and validation processes, I will examine the composition of the society and the city we live in and present it as artwork.

1. Drawing for my installation
2. Make some installations
3. Record the process

While participating in the residence program with other artists, I would love to exchange opinions on artwork and to discuss each artist’s views, culture/environment, and stance on creative activities. Also, it would be wonderful if there were opportunities for artist talks.

I want to use iron and glass for my artwork. It would be great if I could get help for obtaining those materials (iron and glass) and if I could borrow tools for cutting iron and for making holes.
