JIYON HONG

Taiwan

I'm interested in the gap between so-called objective reality and one's perceived reality
and how the latter mutates (transitions), moving away from the real before us. I start
working through finding the errors and limitations of the logic in our perception and the
factors that construct it, such as language, image, knowledge and supposed truth. I am
currently visualizing notations of the failure of memory, failure of translation, perceived
reality and the changeable character of perception through painting, drawing, sculpture
and installation.

I capture things I find in a city, maps, language and images and try to depict how one
image, memory or thought mutates from the original context towards a transformed
version of it in the process of perception. In my work, you can find subjects and images
sprouted from an idea on a certain city and act of correcting one’s memory, which
includes text made of shadow, memory locked in a language form, imaginary scene of a
collapsed building, image betraying a written text, and sculpture transformed from a
drawing. In my explorations, there are two axes whereby provide guide for selecting
material, medium, and poetic elaboration; one is logical side that has tendencies that are
static, concrete and absolute and the other is malleable, movable, repeatable or vulnerable
similar to the way in which memory, illogic or emotion work.

Being whimsical in terms of my search for logic, specificity of materials, architecture,
cities, and perceptions, I position myself as a shuttle between a specificity, a definite
meaning, a firm land, and a poetic elaboration fueled by indeterminacy, abstraction,
memory, and perception structures.
